With a six star review and a sixth place in our poll of six years ago, you may rest assured that I have been looking forward to a second album from Norwegian band On The Rise for far too long. One of the things that made that debut album so fantastic was the appearance of two vocalists: Terje Eide and Bennech Lyngboe. The bad news is that the latter is no longer part of the band. Indeed, OTR is now a one man band, featuring Terje Eide, but of course he got some great help from class musicians such as Christian Wolff, Erik Engebretsenand Eric Ragno. The good news is that survivor Eide is still doing a magnificent job. Most of the 13 songs on offer are solo writings and to be honest: the man knows how to write a catchy song. And that’s not all: listening to “Dream Zone”, I have to admit that I don’t miss Bennech Lyngboe at all. Eide performs his own songs with so much passion that I quickly forgot about his former partner. Count to that the excellent production job (Eide again!) and the conclusion can only be that “Dream Zone” is the (long-awaited) excellent successor. Says Terje Eide: “I’m very happy with the new album. The songs are catchy, groovy and they’ve got the strong choruses and melody lines that I always want them to have. It’s been a joyful musical journey. It’s an album I can support 110%. It’s got the typical OTR sound, but at some point it’s a little rougher than what has been written and produced before”. He gets my support 120%, but unfortunately I can’t give him more than (another) six stars. Another Frontiers Records album that will appear in my top 10 of the year.
