CIRITH UNGOL are among my 5 all time favorite Heavy Metal bands. Their totally unique sound that NO band has managed to achieve is something beyond any comprehension. With 4 Classic Metal releases (“Frost And Fire”-1981, “King Of The Dead”-1984, “One Foot In Hell”-1986 and “Paradise Lost”-1991) they have entered the Metal Pantheon. Those into Epic Metal should buy all their releases at once (if they haven’t already done it!). This is a collection with unreleased versions of known CIRITH UNGOL songs, live versions, demo songs etc plus comments on each track from Rob Garven and Greg Lindstrom (31 songs in total!). The first CD contains 16 songs from the period when Greg Lindstrom was a member of the band (until 1981). These songs are: “Hype Performance”, ”Last Laugh” (known from several live bootlegs), ”Frost And Fire”, ”Eyes”, ”Better Off Dead”, ”100 mph”, ”I’m Alive”, ”Bite Of The Worm”, ”The Twitch”, ”Maybe That’s Why”, ”Ill Met In Lankhmar”, ”Return To Lankhmar”, ”Darkness Weaves”, ”Witchdance”, ”Feeding The Ants” and ”Obsidian” (the only song composed after Greg’s departure from CIRITH UNGOL and more specifically in 1985). 5 of these songs appeared in their albums but all the other are unreleased songs that were written (some of them in 1978!) in times when many of the 80’s “heroes” were drinking milk from the breasts of their mothers! The use of synthesizer is quite extensive but all the songs are great. The second CD contains 15 songs, which are: “Death Of The Sun”, ”Fire”, ”Fallen Idols”, ”Chaos Rising”, ”Fallen Idols”, ”Paradise Lost”, ”Join The Legion”, ”Before The Lash”, ”Atom Smasher” (live) ”, ”Master Of The Pit” (live)”, ”King Of The Dead” (live)”, ”Last Laugh” (live)”, ”Cirith Ungol” (live), “Secret Agent Man” and “Ferrari 308QV On Dyno At 8000 rpm” (just the sound of a Ferrari engine). This CD contains previously released material in different versions. We have “Death Of The Sun”, the song CIRITH UNGOL contributed in the legendary “Metal Massacre” compilation LP. The next 7 songs are songs which were included in their last opus, “Paradise Lost” in demo versions. Here we also find “Paradise Lost” (the track) in the unedited version with the “best 20 seconds of the CD” as Robert Garven has often said in a lot of interviews. The next 5 songs are live versions of CIRITH UNGOL songs (two of them have been used on the CD reissues of “Frost And Fire” and “King Of The Dead”) which KILL! You must listen to the unbelievable live version of “Master Of The Pit” (one of the best songs ever composed!) to understand what I mean. I would kill to see CIRITH UNGOL live! The last song is a cover version of a well known (at least in America) TV show! This CD set is the Holy Grail of all the UNGOL maniacs. Two and a half hours with the most unique Metal band of all time (and at the same time the most unjust “lost” band of all time). As Greg and Rob say inside the booklet they may think of playing some more lost CIRITH UNGOL songs if this CD is successful. So we must all become part of this attempt by buying this CD and show that there are still Metal fans interested in 80’s Metal. Greg, Tim, Rob, Flint we want a reunion and we want it NOW!
